Real Madrid are out of the Copa del Rey after drawing (2-2) at Balaídos in the second leg of the quarter-finals. Los Blancos couldn’t come back after losing (1-2) at Bernabéu Stadium. Zidane’s side tried until the end but Los Blancos lost an opportunity to win one title this season.

As it was expected, Zizou put in the pitch a very offensive squad. Casemiro played as a full back, with Sergio Ramos and Nacho in a defense of three players. Asensio and Isco had to create football, whereas Cristiano and Benzema played in the attacking line. The plan worked at the beginning, with Los Blancos pressuring very high and stealing dangerous balls. Actually Real Madrid could have taken the lead but Cristiano Ronaldo found the bar twice, the second one without goalkeeper.

Real Madrid tried and deserved the goal in the first 30 minutes but they didn’t find the net. Los Blancos got tired and Celta took their chances to arrive to Casilla’s goal. They could score with a couple of chances of Iago Aspas but they opened the scoreboard at the end of the first half, with an own goal by Danilo. The Brazilian right back has no luck in the last games.

Zidane didn’t do any change in the half time, but Real Madrid kept pressuring Celta. Los Blancos found the prize in the 62nd minute with a great free kick from Cristiano Ronaldo. The come back looked possible and Los Blancos had the better chances. Sergio Ramos missed a very clear opportunity in the small box. Zidane started to make some changes but the decisive goal arrived. And it was from Celta de Vigo. Daniel Wass scored the second goal in the last five minutes and the tie was over. Real Madrid finished the game with four strikers and Lucas Vázquez scored the equalizer in the 90th minute. But the miracles was not possible. Los Blancos are knocked out of Copa del Rey.

The Portuguese defender Pepe will leave Real Madrid at the end of the current season to start a new stage in his career in China with Manuel Pellegrini. According to the Spanish media, the full back will play the next season with Hebel China Fortune.

The Chinese club has offered the Portuguese champion a salary of €15M per year, more or less three times what he is currently earning with Los Blancos. Pepe’s contract ends at the end of the current season and he’ll be 34 years old by then. Therefore, the full back has his last opportunity to seal a good deal in his great career.

Hebel China Fortune coach is Manuel Pellegrini. The Chilean coach was also Pepe’s boss when he was training at Real Madrid and the Portuguese was one of the most important players then. This could be another good reason for Pepe to decide to leave. Pepe and the club were negotiating in the past but they didn’t reach an agreement. The player wanted a two-year deal, whereas Real Madrid only offered one year more of contract.

The importance of Pepe in the squad has been lower this year. The Portuguese has suffered several injuries and his last game was back in December against Deportivo. He also missed the FIFA Clubs World Cup in Japan and Nacho is replacing him as the third full back. In La Liga he has only played 8 games this season. However, he was a key player in the last season, where Real Madrid conquered the Champions League. Besides, he was one of the best -perhaps the best- defender of the Euro, winning the title with Portugal.

In these 10 years with the club, he has become one of the prefered players for the supporters, thanks to his love to the club and his professionalism. Zizou’s main problems are in the defense line. Raphael Varane didn’t travel to Galicia and Pepe continues out of the squad. Taking this in consideration, the only available players are Coentrao, Danilo, Nacho and Sergio Ramos.

Zidane had to look into the youngster squad to look for some defenders. Castilla manager, Iván Ramis, said on Twitter that Zidane should count on the youngsters more and mentioned the name of Achraf Hakimi. One day later, he’s in the list to Vigo.

Zinedine Zidane spoke in press conference in Madrid before travelling to Vigo to face Celta in the second leg of the quarter-finals round of Copa del Rey. Los Blancos need to win at Balaídos to come back after the shocking defeat one week ago.

The French manager is still confident despite the latest bad results and the injury concerns: “I think we are very well physically and we’re keep going. When you hear the questions, it looks like we are the bottom of the table, that we are fighting to avoid relegation. I’m not concerned and the dressing room is cheered up. We have a wonderful game to play. When the things go well, everything is easy but we are very cheerful”.

Speaking about the injuries, James Rodríguez won’t be available again: “He had problems in the other leg but it’s a strain, not an injury, and that’s good”, Zidane said. The manager is a bit concerned because of the injuries: “I don’t want to see a player injured and sad. We are going to fight”, Zizou said.

Toto Berizzo could save some players in the last Celta game against Real Sociedad and, for instance, Iago Aspas didn’t play: “We know the difficulty of the game, losing the first leg. Madrid are going strong in La Liga at the moment and are favourites to win the title. It would be a great achievement for the Spanish giants, but there is another feat that would be even bigger – becoming the champions of Europe for the second season in a row. No team has claimed the European crown back to back in the Champions League era. Madrid have a chance to create history.

According to Betway, Madrid are third favourites to win the Champions League this season behind fellow Spanish club Barcelona and German outfit Bayern Munich, but one should not be surprised if they become the frontrunner after the first knockout round. Los Blancos will take on Napoli in the last-16 stage, and they should be able to progress to the quarter finals of Europe’s premier club competition.

Madrid have a very strong squad. Cristiano Ronaldo is still one of the world’s best players, Karim Benzema is scoring important goals and Gareth Bale is as good as ever. Toni Kroos and Isco are also playing well, and Keylor Navas remains a superb goalkeeper.

The problem with Madrid is that defensively they are not as good as they should be. Star defender Sergio Ramos has scored six goals in La Liga, but the Spain international has not looked very consistent or confident at the back and has also been shown five yellow cards in just 11 league matches. During the Champions League group stage, the Spanish giants conceded ten goals in six matches, two more than Sporting Lisbon, who finished at the bottom.

For Madrid to win the Champions League during the 2016-17 campaign, they will have to get the better of top teams, such as Bayern, Barcelona, Juventus and Manchester City. To win against such strong sides, Los Blancos cannot afford to make even a single mistake. Would Zidane’s side be able to maintain discipline at the back?

Moreover, would Madrid president Florentino Perez be too bothered if the team fail to win the Champions League but clinch La Liga? It is nothing short of an embarrassment that since 2008 Madrid have become the champions of Spain only once (in 2012). Given Los Blancos’ current league position, it would make sense for them to pay more attention and give more value to La Liga.

As teams have found out over the years, it is extremely hard to win the Champions League two years in a row. The odds are stacked up against Madrid, but there is always a first time for everything. The Spanish club’s fans would certainly be optimistic that the team would win both La Liga and the Champions League this season.

Real Madrid lost an important target this week because Alexander Isak, former AIK Solna player, has signed for Borussia Dortmund. The Swedish youngster was a goal for Los Blancos, but Borussia Dortmund were quicker and got the young talent. It’s now official. Alexander Isak won’t sign with Real Madrid because he is already a new Borussia Dortmund player. ‘The new Zlatan Ibrahimovic’, as he was called, has signed a new deal with the German giants until 2022 for a transfer deal of €9M. FIFA have still to approve the agreement because Isak is still underage.

Real Madrid were chasing the Swedish footballer and the Spanish giants had almost a deal with the player and the club, however, the problems with FIFA and the unavailability to sign any player in this transfer window have frustrated the deal.

Borussia Dortmund have published a tweet with Isak already wearing the yellow t-shirt. “We are delighted that he had chosen Borussia Dortmund”, the sports director, Michael Zorc said in the official website.

Isak is only 17 years old but the big clubs of the continent were already fighting to get him on board their projects. In 24 games this season with AIK Solna, Isak scored 10 goals, an average of one goal every 160 minutes. His height -190 cm- and the nationality made the parallelism with Zlatan Ibrahimovic inevitable.

Now, Isak will have the opportunity to shine with the German club. He will be the perfect replacement for Patrick-Emerick Aubameyang, who is receiving many offers from the biggest European clubs. Actually, the forwards said many times he wants to play at Santiago Bernabéu and Los Blancos could think on him to reinforce the attacking line.

Zinedine Zidane continues receiving bad news in January from the medical reports. On Saturday, he had to substitute both Marcelo and Luka Modric due to injuries in the game against Málaga. It was expected that the players will miss one month of competition, but now it’s official and Marcelo will miss the first leg in the Champions League Last 16 Round against Napoli.

The manager has received good and bad news. Obviously, the bad ones came with Marcelo and his absence in the next month of competition. Luckily, Luka Modric doesn’t have anything important and should be fit in 10 days.

“Following tests carried out today on Marcelo at the Sanitas La Moraleja University Hospital, he has been diagnosed with a grade 2 muscle injury in his left hamstring”, Marcelo medical report said. Therefore, the left back will be out of the team around one month, missing the games against Celta, Real Sociedad, Osasuna, Espanyol, Valencia and Villarreal in La Liga and the clash against Napoli in the Champions League.

This is a recurrent injury for Marcelo, who always suffers muscular problems in the month of January. The Brazilian doesn’t have a replacement in the squad because Fabio Coentrao is now showing the level to play with the white t-shirt. Therefore, the left back had to play all the minutes and the muscular problems arrived.

At least, the good news came with Luka Modric. According to the medical report, Luka Modric “has been diagnosed with a strain in his right abductor muscle”. He will be out of the pitch 10 days, so he should be fit to face Napoli in the Champions League. The midfielder will miss the game against Celta in Copa del Rey and Real Sociedad in La Liga.

Now, Zinedine Zidane has a big problem in the defence. Carvajal and Marcelo are out of the competition for the next month with serious injuries, whereas Pepe continues with his problems. Coentrao is not suitable to play with Real Madrid and Danilo has received severe criticism in the last games. So Sergio Ramos, Varane and Nacho will have to play in the defense with Lucas Vázquez as an emergency right back, a new position for him.
