Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid have set their eyes on Augsburg’s Ghanaian left-back Baba Rahman, according to reports from Spain.

The 20-year-old defender has had a terrific performance in the recent African Cup of Nations. His great season at the Bundesliga has also awaken interest from a number of big European clubs.

Borussia Dortmund and AS Roma had previously shown an interest in signing Rahman, and now Spanish press has reported Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have joined the fight.

Los Blancos are willing to sign a young left-back to become Marcelo’s new back-up, since Fabio Coentrao is expected to leave the club next summer.

Florentino Perez’s first choice is Valencia’s 19-year-old Jose Luis Gaya, but the Spaniard is on talks to extend his contract and increase his buy-out clause, which would make the transfer pretty difficult.

Atletico are also looking for a left-back since they might lose Cristian Ansaldi in June, as the Argentinian is on loan from Zenit Saint Petersburg.

Rahman would be a pretty good deal for both Madrid clubs, since his buy-out clause is 10 million euros and he’s one of the biggest African prospects. In marketing terms, it would also open the door to the big African market.

Rahman signed for Augsburg last summer from Greuther Furth in a 2.5 million euros. He has made 16 appearances for the German club, becoming a guaranteed starter and making a big impression in the Bundesliga.
