Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has won the award for best defender in La Liga at a ceremony in Barcelona.
The annual awards, organised by La Liga, recognise the achievements of the most outstanding performers throughout the 2014-15 campaign. And Ramos was named ahead of Barcelona centre back Gerard Pique in the defender category.
There was more good news for Real Madrid fans as Colombian James Rodriquez pipped the likes of Andres Iniesta and Antoine Griezmann in the best midfielder category having impressed following his move from Monaco in the summer. The 24-year-old netted 17 goals in 46 appearances in his opening season at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Despite scoring 61 goals – a personal best – Cristiano Ronaldo was beaten by Barcelona rival Leo Messi to the best striker award. Messi fired the Catalan outfit to La Liga glory last season and also helped the Camp Nou side to success in the Champions League and Copa del Rey. Ronaldo, though, did pick up a trophy as he won the Fans’ Player of the Year award.
Unsurprisingly, having experienced such success, more Barcelona players were recognised, with Claudio Bravo named as the best goalkeeper in the division, Neymar picking up the Best South American award, and boss Luis Enrique winning the coach of the year.
