Winning a tenth European Cup, La Decima, is an obsession for Real Madrid, according to boss Carlo Ancelotti.
Los Blancos take on Bundesliga side Schalke on Wednesday night in the first leg of their last-16 clash. And the Italian manager says he wants his team to finish the season strongly and lift the club’s 10th European crown.
Madrid head to Germany on a 26-game unbeaten run in all competitions, but with a terrible record on German soil – just one win in 25 matches, and none in their last 10 visits.
But Madrid won’t focus on that record, Ancelotti told Canal Plus. He says that after a slow start to the season by their standards, Los Blancos are right on track to end the campaign on a high.
“We have worked for seven months to build a good solid base. We have built the house, now we have to decorate it. You cannot live in a house without anything inside, and we hope to decorate it well,” he said.
Despite denials from some quarters saying it’s an obsession, Ancelotti freely admitted winning the 10th European Cup for the club is his aim. “We want to play the final of the Champions League. Obsession? ‘La Decima’ is a word you can hear again and again, it is a big motivation for everyone.”
