Winning the Champions League in his first season with Real Madrid has been the highlight of Gareth Bale’s career, the Welsh forward has said.

The 25-year-old signed for Los Blancos in a 91-million-euro deal last year from Tottenham Hotspur, and after a slow start to life in the Spanish capital, he became a fans’ favourite by scoring in the final of the Copa del Rey and Champions League.

At the start of his second season in the Spanish capital, Bale said he wants to keep winning trophies with Madrid and that the Champions League is always the most important trophy for the club.

In an interview with BTSport, the Welshman stated: “I think the club had been chasing it for I think 12 years and it was a reason they brought me in – to try and make the team stronger to win that Champions League.”

He continued: “I think the Champions’ League is always special to any player and a club like Madrid, as I said, is known for its big European nights and winning the Champions League so I would probably say that it’s our biggest target.

“We want to win every trophy as well. That’s something that we’re obviously looking forward to, that we’re excited about, and it’s what we’ll be working hard all season to try and do.”
