Cristiano Ronaldo was substituted with tears in his eyes in the Euro 2016 final in Saint Denis against France. It was only the first half but a hard collision with French star Dimitri Payet left the Portuguese player out of the most important game in his national team history.
He knew how important was that game for Portugal and he could avoid to cry before being substituted by Ricardo Quaresma. Cristiano Ronaldo could barely walk and he had several problems in his left knee. The Real Madrid striker finally left the pitch in the 24th minute and he went straight away to the dressing room.
After winning the trophy, the medical examinations showed that Cristiano has damage in the medial collateral ligament in his left knee. According to the reports, Cristiano Ronaldo will be out of the pitches at least four weeks, so he could miss the start of the season with Real Madrid, including the European Supercup.
Real Madrid is facing Seville in the European Supercup in Norway the 9th of August. The traditional recovery for this kind of injuries are four weeks, so Cristiano might not be fit for the first trophy in the season 2016/17. Besides, it’s quite unlikely that the club would risk another injury by forcing him to play against Seville. Keylor Navas is also expected to miss the game after having surgery this summer. Two major blows for Zinedine Zidane’s plans.
Cristiano Ronaldo now will have time to enjoy his holidays before coming back to work. The Real Madrid squad will start next week with the training sessions and to prepare the new season in Montreal but the Portuguese star won’t join the team mates until August. Despite the injury, he has reasons to be happy this summer. Ronaldo won the Champions League and the Euro the same season and he’s getting closer to his fourth Ballon d’Or.
