Fabio Capello believes his former club, Real Madrid, will win the race for the La Liga title ahead of Barcelona and Atletico de Madrid.
The ex-Los Blancos manager, who himself guided the side to the league title in his time in charge of the club, said Madrid possess the greatest strength in depth of any of the three squads – something that will be crucial in ensuring they cross the line first.
Los Merengues lost 4-3 to reigning champions Barcelona at the weekend, a result that three the La Liga race wide open. Atletico lead based on their better head-to-head record against Carlo Ancelotti’s men, while Los Cules are just a point behind in third.
Speaking to the EFE press agency, Capello stated: “I watched El Clasico one day afterwards because I was flying while they were playing. It was a great match and a great advert for Spanish football throughout the world.
“Of course we will see a different league now, but we also need to see how it affects the Champions League. I think Madrid have the most possibilities, because they have the biggest squad and are playing very well.”
Assessing the other two sides, the Italian said we are now starting to see the Barcelona of old, after a run of slightly indifferent form by their high standards.
“Barca have gone back to being the team the whole world knows. Atletico have surprised me but I saw them play against Barca in Madrid,” he said.
“Atleti have a huge desire and strength, but they have a thin squad. When they play in the Champions League against Barca we need to see what will happen in the following league games.
