Florentino Perez has called for Spanish press to be responsible at his speech during the traditional annual Christmas lunch with the Madrid journalists.
Perez explains he understands sports journalism in Spain is often closer to entertainment than to proper news reporting, but told the press that they “have a responsibility to report everything that goes on at our club while adhering to the values of journalism.”
“Real Madrid is one of this country’s most beloved symbols. For many people Real Madrid represents Spain. That brings with it an enormous amount of responsibility for all of us and we have the obligation to protect that image, lead by example and be transparent, and continue to add to the Real Madrid legend,” he added.
Florentino thank the media for their “dedication” to the club: “Your work is very important as it informs lovers of football about what Real Madrid represents to millions of people.”
The Los Blancos president also explained he is “aware that we have to show respect to our fans, our members and the press, who in turn have always shared this sense of responsibility with us.”
He closed the event wishing all the journalists happy holiday with their loved ones and hoping “that 2016 brings you good health, which is the most important thing of all.”
