Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas is ready to ask the club for a new contract just days after appearing to be close to leaving the club, reports in Spain have said.

The Costa Rican international was due to be part of the deal that would have seen David de Gea move from Manchester United to Los Blancos, with the 10-time Champions League winners also paying 30 million euros for the Spain shot stopper.

But when the paperwork to register the transfers arrived with the footballing authorities minutes past the transfer deadline, the deal was called off meaning Navas would be staying in Madrid. Reports had suggested he was so close to leaving the club that he was waiting at Barajas Airport with his wife awaiting clearance to travel to Manchester for a medical.

Now, Sport says the 28-year-old wants to take advantage over the situation at the club knowing his hand has been strengthened on the negotiating table. With just Kiko Casilla as a viable alternative, Navas feels he can get a better contract and prolong his stay in the Spanish capital – where he is still keen to succeed.

Navas has been given time off from his country in order to get his head right again after a rollercoaster few days.
