Real Madrid have announced the agreement to extend Marcelo’s contract until 2022. Therefore, the Brazilian left back will be tied to the club two years more, securing a spot in the squad and getting closer to retire with Los Blancos. Today, he signed his new contract and spoke with the media after the deal was sealed.
Marcelo arrived at Santiago Bernabéu in 2007 when he was only 18 years old. Now, he’s played 415 games, so he’s getting closer to Roberto Carlos milestone, who appeared in 527 matches with Los Blancos, becoming the foreigner with more appearances with the Real Madrid t-shirt.
The left back had signed a contract until 2020, but the club wanted to secure his continuity two years more. At the moment, he’s the best player in the world in his position, so these are great news for Real Madrid supporters. Besides, Marcelo has become a very important player in the dressing room, being the second captain of the team after Sergio Ramos.
In the unveiling of the new contract Marcelo said: “I’m really proud of being part of the history of Real Madrid. I’m very happy and very lucky to be here. Renewing my contract for five years more is an accomplished dream. And seeing my family so happy, makes me happy as well”.
The Brazilian spoke about the importance of the club: “I knew Real Madrid for the news, but I was taught Real Madrid values when I arrived. Real Madrid helps the world, the children… It’s a great club”.
His new contract will expire when he turns 34, so perhaps we are talking about a one-club-man: “I wish I had played for Castilla, with the youngsters. I feel like an academy boy. Hopefully I can be here a lot of years. Real Madrid have always been my second home”.
