Real Madrid look set to be in a two horse race with Premier League side Arsenal to secure the signature of Real Sociedad midfielder Asier Illarramendi, according to the Daily Express.
Reports have suggested the Gunners were keen on making a move for him, but following success with the Spanish side in the European Under-21 Championship this month, Los Blancos are also believed to ready to make a move.
The Santiago Bernabeu club are on the look out for a long-term replacement for Xabi Alonso, and see Illarramendi’s passing ability and vision as key in being able to fit into the side.
The 23-year-old, who has a contract with Real Sociedad until 2018, has a 28 million euro buyout clause.
It is also not known whether the player wants to stay with Sociedad for another season having helped them qualify for the Champions League following a remarkable campaign for the Anoeta club.
