Former Manchester United and England defender has said that Cristiano Ronaldo has gone from being a show pony to being the best footballer on the planet.

The pair played together for six seasons at Old Trafford prior to Ronaldo’s move to Real Madrid in 2009. The 30-year-old has since gone on to score 324 goals in 308 games for Los Blancos – breaking Raul’s previous record in more than 400 games fewer.

Ferdinand was one of the Premier League’s toughest defenders in his time and recalled the early days of Ronaldo’s United career when he arrived as a talented teenager from Sporting Lisbon.

Speaking to BT Sport, the now-retired centre back stated: “When he came to Manchester United, he was a show pony. He wanted to do skills, he wanted to show people how good he was and take people on, take the mickey out of full-backs.”

And he added: “Then he realised it was about end product and to become the best player in the world it would be all about purely scoring goals, or setting goals up for others and having an impact on games. He’s forced himself to become that guy. He’s been relentless season upon season, raising the bar. That’s greatness right there.”
