Covering football is big business these days, and between newspapers, websites, and numerous blogs out there, the competition is huge. And sometimes, to try and get the attention of readers or to get a few more hits on a particular page, ridiculous rumours surface and snowball.
And one of the most random rumours we have seen in a while involves French champions PSG making a 120 million euro bid for Real Madrid pair Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. The origin of the story seems to be a Swiss website Infoticker.ch, which suggests the big spending club wants to take the Los Blancos pair to French capital in the summer.
Clearly it was a slow news day and there was little else to write about before the weekend. Ronaldo has scored 25 goals for Los Blancos this season. His hat trick against Real Sociedad two weeks ago was his 23rd for the club in just four years. He has scored 226 goals in 217 games since arriving at the Santiago Bernabeu. And he has a contract for another five years.
Benzema admittedly has been linked with a move away from the club in recent months – with Arsenal mentioned as a likely destination. Talk of a switch coincided with his slow start to the campaign, but it has gone quiet on that front since his upturn in form and since becoming a vital part in the BBC – Bale, Benzema and Cristiano trio that leave defenders quaking in the boots.
PSG have Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edison Cavani upfront. Neither would be too happy to warm a bench and make way for another striker to come in.
Don’t worry Madridistas – this particular rumour is ridiculous, and the team over at that Swiss site should probably stop basing their stories on Championship Manager.
Let PSG give us CAVANI and we give them BENZEMA
