Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has insisted Cristiano Ronaldo is not thinking about breaking the Champions League record for the most amount of goals scored in the competition when Los Blancos take on Liverpool.
The Portugal striker has netted 70 times in the competition in his career and lies just one behind legendary striker and former Real Madrid frontman Raul, who last week signed for the New York Cosmos.
Real take on Liverpool at the Santiago Bernabeu knowing that a win will put them in the second round of the competition they won last season. And Ancelotti told reporters Ronaldo is focused on helping his team win three more points and not on breaking the record against the bitter rivals of his former club Manchester United.
“Cristiano is working hard for himself and the side, just like other players. I don’t think he’s thinking about the record, he has time – it’s not his last game. He is focused on playing for the team,” he said.
While on the topic of goalscorers, the Italian defended his countryman Mario Balotelli and said the striker shouldn’t take all the blame for Liverpool’s woes this season.
“He has quality and is at a side where they’re not playing well having lost Suarez, who scored a lot.”They need another solution but I don’t think all of Liveprool’s problems are Balotelli. He needs to do his work for the side, that’s all that can be asked of him.”
