Real Madrid left back Marcelo says all the players are hurting having failed to put in a performance against Barcelona on Saturday.
Los Blancos slumped to a 4-0 defeat to the closest rivals at the Santiago Bernabeu. Such was the manner of the surrender to Catalan outfit that the large sections of fans in the stadium jeered, whistled and held up the white hankies in anger at their side.
Speaking to reporters in the aftermath, Marcelo, who missed a great opportunity to pull a goal back when his side was only 2-0 down, stated: “Of course the result hurts a lot, because we’re at home. We gave it a real go but unfortunately we weren’t able to put in a good match. We have to put this behind us, take the things we did wrong and learn from them. We have to face up to it and apologise to the fans. We’re going to keep on fighting.”
Asked about the reaction of the home fans, the Brazilian said they had every right to show their disapproval.
“The fans are entitled to complain when things don’t go well for their team. We tried to do what we could to win the game. There are no excuses, we have to fight hard and stand up and be counted. Of course the team are hurting, but we have to move on from it quickly and put Madrid where they belong. We have to get over these things,” he commented.
