Álvaro Morata played again at Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday against Italy and he was able to score one goal despite starting the game on the bench, a usual spot for him in this stadium. It was a special match for him, going back to his home only some weeks after leaving Spain to play for Chelsea. Perhaps, Los Blancos are already regretting this sale after seeing what happened against Valencia and the level showed by the Spaniard in this start of the season.
It was a hard decision to make, but Morata was very sure about leaving Madrid. Florentino Pérez and Zinedine Zidane wanted him to stay, but the forward was eager of more minutes and Antonio Conte promised him to be the star of his new Chelsea. Therefore, Real Madrid had to sell and they put a high price of €80M. Deal done.
However, some weeks later Real Madrid might already be regretting this deal. Morata started the season with Chelsea with 2 goals in his first 3 games in the Premier League and he showed a similar level with Spain against Italy and Liechtenstein. In the meantime, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale struggled to find the net with Los Blancos missing many chances against Valencia.
On top of that, Real Madrid have not signed any forward during the summer. Borja Mayoral went back from his loan at Wolfsburg, but the U-21 doesn’t seem to have the level to replace Morata. The club also sold Mariano Díaz to Olympique Lyonnais, with a buy-back clause, so Los Blancos are weaker in this position.
Cristiano Ronaldo should be the chosen one to score the goals with Los Blancos, but his five-games ban have left a big blank in the attacking line. It wasn’t Real Madrid choice, but perhaps they should have put more effort on keeping Morata and not letting him go to another top club. Did Morata deserve more opportunities with Zidane?
Keeping Benzema and selling Morata was a very stupid decision and i’m astonished real choose to do this, Morata is also 6 years younger i think, than Benzema which makes Madrids decision only more baffling
