Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has been charged with misconduct by UEFA for entering the pitch during last Saturday’s Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.

The Spanish international was suspended for the game after having received two yellow cards in the previous matches. He was sitting in the stands next to Los Blancos bench, with Nacho Fernandez and Jese Rodriguez at his side.

When Gareth Bale scored to goal that put Los Merengues 2-1 ahead, Alonso could not contain his joy and jump from the stands, ran down the touchline and joined the celebration with his team-mates.

After that he went back to his sit, although he returned to the field after the game to pick up his medal and celebrate the victory.

The Colchoneros manager Diego Simeone has also been charged with misconduct for entering the field of play twice during the match. In the final minutes of the extra time, he ran to confront Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane after the defender mocked one of Atletico’s players.

Alonso and Simeone will have their cases heard at a UEFA disciplinary hearing on July 17th.

  1. Please let the jentle boy be. Alonso was red carded not to play the final or sit on the substitute bench, but not to stop him from celebrating when his team score goals. Please Real Madrid President and the entire management, should not sit and watch injustice done to the boy. UEFA should not make much ado about nothing pl-e-a-s-e!!!
